Colorado, like most states, requires owners of vehicles operating on the roads and highways of the state to meet minimum auto insurance. Before you can register a vehicle in Colorado, you must have proof of liability car insurance coverage for it. The minimum insurance requirements for Colorado are $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $15,000 per accident for property. If you are caught driving without proof of insurance for the first time you will have to pay a minimum of $550 in fines. You will also have four points added into your motor vehicle record which will make your insurance rate more expensive. If you are caught a the second time, you will have to pay a minimum fine of $1000. Your drivers license will also be suspended for four months. If you still havent learned your lesson and receive a third violation, you will have to pay a minimum amount of $1000. Your drivers license will be suspended for eight months and you may be required to serve 40-hours community service or more.

Under the Colorado Motorist Insurance Identification Program or MIIP, Colorado insurance companies are required to provide the state information about the status of their customers policies. However, unlike before where insurance policy owners with lapses or cancelled policies were notified and required to show proof of insurance, under the present programs, insurance owners are no longer notified and no longer have to face the possibility of losing their registration.
